It never ceases to amaze me, the ways God works in our lives. Most of the journeys he leads us on aren’t straight lines. They’re crooked paths filled with unexpected frustrations…

And blessings.

For a long time, I have loved putting Scripture to music. My first attempts go back almost 20 years. One day, I got about it and put together a few Scripture songs. I was the music director at my church, so I put these songs in the church service to see if the congregation liked them.

It didn’t quite turn out like I hoped.

We played my Scripture songs several times over the course of a few weeks. A few people were encouraging, but not very many. Then one day one of my pastors pulled me aside and confided in me. He said his teenage sons didn’t like these songs I wrote and told me maybe they weren’t right for the congregation. “They feel like they’re back in Sunday school,” he told me.

Not the reaction I hoped for…

Then one day I got an email. It was from one of the younger moms at our church. She told me the songs I wrote were fun, catchy, and perfect for kids. Had I ever thought of using these for kids to learn Bible verses?

This was a new thought for me.

One of our first recording sessions…

Her suggestions stayed with me. I wasn’t sure what to do, but it was nice to hear something encouraging. Then one day I came across this verse, where Jesus tells us how much he values children:

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”
Mark 9:37 NIV

Lisa leading the kids…

I had read this passage before, but now the “lights” turned on. When we love and serve children, we serve not only Jesus himself but his Father in Heaven. That means our Lord takes it personally when we minister to kids.

Kids are VIPs. They are precious. Writing songs for kids is a high calling. Over the next few weeks, this began to sink in. I now started to understand why God had put these songs on my heart. I understood the purpose.

Lisa directing the kids at the Rock church in Minneapolis…

I wrote. And wrote. I amassed 40-50 Scripture songs, figuring I could come up with 10 good ones if I wrote enough of them. I also sat my wife, Lisa, down and said these words:

“Honey, I want us to make a kid’s album of Scripture songs.”

Lisa, Spencer and the “WORDology” singers…

It took a long time and a lot of work to get that first album done. I recorded the instruments, my wife sang lead, and my daughter and some of her friends sang background vocals on it. Since then, we’ve recorded a lot more music and have done a few kids’ concerts. It’s amazing to hear kids sing these songs with us, and Lisa loves connecting with these young souls when we perform. We’ve even had several parents say they enjoy listening to our songs, and it helps them remember Scripture along with their kids.

What a wonderful blessing.
